in michigan. i'm all for healthy debate about any issue but a debate must be based on the factions which is not the debate lou dobbs seems interested in. >> despite the president's misleading suggestions to the contrary michigan workers still tonight have the right to form and join a union. they still have the right to bargain, collectively. and what this law changes is forced union membership. i repeat, forced union membership. >> eliot: repeat it all you want no matter how many times you say it, it will still be flat-out wrong. federal law clearly prohibits unions from requiring membership. this has been made clear in a series of supreme court cases including 1963's national labor relations board v general motors. 195's pattern maker league v. national labors board. it states that workers are only required to pay a fee that covers collective bargaining and other actions from which they directly benefit and none of the unions political activities. just to make it clear mr. dobbs, they are not required to be a member of

to push through this right to work. >> this is interesting actually. michigan is a heavily unionized state so why would it be going right to work. there's enormous downward pressure on wages on american companies around the world that can make things cheaper elsewhere than here and our wages are uncompetitive in a lot of ways. in effect what people in michigan have to decide, do you want fewer jobs at higher wages or lower jomore jobs at lower w they have decided they want more jobs. >> you look at michigan and detroit, that's a pretty easy answer. >> the unemployment rate. >> the unemployment rate is horrible. detroit in 1960, i think, was one of the wealth nest city if not the wealthiest city in america and now one of the poorest. >> the fourth largest. >> this is a done deal, going through the house today, to a republican governor and says he will sign it. >> it's symbolic of two things, one, the politics of it all, what we've seen in wisconsin and elsewhere and the unpopularity of unions these days and secondly an economic phenomenon, basically a statement we want jobs and we're willin

. they passed antiunion laws in michigan, proposed new schemes to rig electoral college, planned new anti-choice bills in states like michigan, arkansas and texas. i mean, it's almost like the election never happened. absolutely. it's like they almost forgot who won. look, this is one they had during the primary. one of the most tenacious, one of the most ridiculous -- you just played a lot of clips. you left out some of the really good ones. they had all of those debates. people got to see and decide, look, all of these guys are extreme. every last one of them. and then they claim oh, we didn't have the best kand dot, who, by the way, tried to go to the cent er and folks figured that ut. they underestimated the fact that, reverend sharpton, they're playing to a small minority. they keep playing to this loud, small minority where most of america has moved on, including their children. the younger generation. that's where they're failing. >> well, marge, when you listen to joe say that, those statistics bear him out. appalled nbc wall street journal poll says the favorability among republi

wisconsin is really starting to take the brunt of this and beginning to snow hard now in northern michigan. we'll pick up an additional six to ten inches in northern michigan and wisconsin. but it's the winds that are making it very difficult for the plows to keep up with. we have winds gusting from wichita to des moines, above 40 miles per hour this morning. so travel in the midwest, very dangerous. and i'll continue to give you any updates here on "morning joe." when i hear more information of the mobile area in alabama, possibly struck by a tornado within the last half hour. you're watching "morning joe." we're brewed by starbucks. this family used capital one venture miles to come home for the holidays. that's double miles you can actually use... sadly, their brother's white christmas just got "blacked out." , of course, here are. so numbers on your screen. met with laughter by michigan mcconnell senate minority leader said i didn't take this seriously. what was your take on this? >> i think mcconnell is right. this is not a serious proposal. the republics intimated that they might be willing to put some revenue on the table. and that's when the democrats basically said okay, then we want everything. it's not unlike the used car sales men or even the new car sales men who says i think we have got a deal. let me take the sales manager. then he comes back and says after we add the undercoating and that special paint and a dealer prep package, then it's going to cost you. this look, there is an old line that every person understands, when the teenage boy says if you just let me kiss you, that's all i want and that's the game the democrats are playing. look,. >> now you are speaking my language. >> i knew that clayton you and dave would totally understand this. >> right. >> but the point is the republics are not going to fall for this and she shouldn't and they couldn't. and it's unfortunate that

engler was doing up in michigan, what other reform-minded governors were doing across the country on health care reform, on welfare reform, the republicans, conservatives, controlled it. as i said to jim yesterday, there's been an anti-intellectual strain in this party for the past four, five, six years. it's now costing us millions of votes across the country. and millions and millions of dollars. and he seemed to get that as well. >> yeah. the good news is that the republicans have got them -- clearly have gotten the message, and they're moving faster than i ever thought they would. >> yeah. >> so i'm encouraged. >> they really are. i mean, i heard hannity right after the election started talking about immigration reform. >> immigration reform. >> krauthammer. >> you're seeing it there, on taxes, on opportunity. look, you may even see it one day on climate change. i think the debates are changing. >> this sounds so good, but then i read charles krauthammer. nothing but a power play. obama's objective in these negotiations is not economic but political. not to solve the debt cris
